Spring 2022 Updates:
One of the things we (OCCFTA Exec Council) have been working as a whole team to make sure that everyone understands their right to have union representation. Weingarten rules apply to any conversation where College officials ask you questions that could lead to disciplinary action against you. They may also be invoked when members might be asked questions that could result in a change of working conditions. It is always a good idea for members to ask for a union representative to attend any meeting with administration. Even when not leading to discipline, it is nice to have a third party in the room to listen to the nature of the conversation and be able to debrief with the member after the fact.
I also attended the NYSUT Representative Assembly in early April. It was great to see support from Gov Hochul and others from around the state and other national union organizations (AFT) all in one room. Even though the Community College representatives are a small percentage of the NYSUT membership, it is still important to get our voices heard in a bigger arena. We talked about whether we would like to see any resolutions come forward from our campus or in combination with neighboring campuses for next year. This is a conversation we can continue to have in the fall.
My door or inbox (hliggett21@gmail.com) is always open to hear from anyone on union related issues. If I do not know the answer, I will try to find out!"
